Large Wood Debris Placement - North Branch of the Au Sable

June, 2008

On June 21, 2008, the Challenge Chapter of Trout Unlimited volunteered to help Huron Pines place large woody debris along the bank of the North Branch of the Au Sable River, in an effort to enhance the fish habitat. We chose a spot where there was cold water input from a groundwater seep. This area of the bank was also lined with reed canary grass, an invasive species.

Fifteen members of the Chapter and two Huron Pines staff moved and placed several thousand pounds of debris, felled and placed trees, and covered the invasive grasses so that they will die off. This debris placement will provide both a structural and thermal refuge for the fish.

This is another fine example of the continuing efforts of the Challenge Chapter. We will continue our projects in the future, and we will assist local conservation groups like Huron Pines in their efforts to protect our precious watersheds.

We would also like to thank the folks at Fuller's North Branch Outing Club for being our hosts for the weekend. Without you we wouldn't have been able to be so successful in our project.
